Jobs

Random English Word
[edit]Hi there,
I'd like to know whether there is a chance to display a random English word on Wiktionary. I know there's a "random entry" link on the left panel, but it shows words from all languages, not just English. Is there a way to display a random English word only? Thank you in advance 2001:930:154:8BC0:4D80:6B43:2F78:6084 17:47, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
When definitions are italicized
[edit]Hi! I'm looking for specific guidelines/explainations of why some definitions are italicized. Is it to do with proper nouns? Thanks! TurquoiseGoose (talk) 06:38, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- When the definitions are not glosses, see Wiktionary:Style guide#Types of definitions. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 10:07, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- The link seems to concern capitalization? TurquoiseGoose (talk) 03:08, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
English usage of the word "zib"
[edit]This section of the "zib" page was apparently dumped, years ago, because no-one could find any examples of its use in English writing. Perhaps this should be revised, since I've found an appropriate example: "The Inimitable Jeeves" (1923) by P.G. Wodehouse; W.W.Norton paperback edition (2011), page 181 -
[Bertie Wooster to Bingo Little] "That's the least of your troubles," I said. It seemed impossible to rouse the poor zib to a sense of his position.
From the context, "zib" means something like "a pathetic loser". This does match one of the deleted references (i.e. from the Arabic for "penis") in the time-honoured tradition of calling an inept person "a tool". (Not "a prick", however: that is almost always pejorative, while "tool" is pitying.) Those references can be found in the Discussion section on the ZIB page.

When to use wikipedia template?
[edit]The page on dual numbers has its Wikipedia counterpart listed in the "Further reading" section instead of using a wikipedia template. I was wondering if there's any reason for this to be the case or if the wikipedia template should be preferred universally? NOTAROBOT1101 (talk) 23:53, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
Looking for an experienced editor to look over my recent contributions
[edit]I'm new to editing Wiktionary but I've been adding some audio pronunciations and IPA to various pages. I just want to see that my contributions are of a good enough standard. I'm no master linguist but I know IPA well enough and am capable of reading a chart, so I'm hoping that what I've added is good. I have trouble hearing the word stress but I assume that an entry without marked stress is better than none at all. I also hope that my pronunciations are of good enough quality. Adding IBM terms and issues when making the citations
[edit]I am willing to add some computing terms made by IBM and published in various glossaries. I am having some issues with the referencing tags. Could someone please explain to me how do it?
Other than that, would my contributions be welcome to Wiktionary? Thank you in advance!
